What determines the lenght of time that it takes for a movie in theater to come out on dvd?

is it how good the movie does in the box office? or is it just that it takes to much time for the company to make enought copies

Actually, what determines the theatre to DVD window is all in the marketing. If a movie was received well by the public it will usually come out on DVD a lot sooner. Take the film 300 for example. That defied expectations and nearly grossed $300 mil, but its already available on DVD (just 5 months after release). Its usually the films that bomb at the box office that take longer to come out on DVD. It gives the studios more time to re-market the film for home video. The average is 5 months after theatrical release.

How much money it is NOT making at theaters. Less box office, sooner DVD.
Box office! If a movie doesn't make very much money, the company releases it on DVD hoping to recoup some of its money with sales.
